MURARI, BHAI
MURARI, BHAI, a Dhaun Khatri of Rohtas, now in Pakistan, was a devoted Sikh of the time of Guru Arjan. He, as says Bhai Mani Singh, Sikhan di Bhagat Mala, once came to see Guru Arjan and said, “Lord, we regularly recite the sacred hymns and we reflect upon them; yet our minds are not cleansed.” Guru Arjan quoted from Guru Nanak`s Japu: “If the mind be defiled by sin, it is purged by the love of nam i.e. the Divive Name.” “Therefore” said the Guru, “continue reciting and listening to gurbam and practise ndm. Thus will your mind be purified.”Bhai Murari, says Bhai Santokh Singh, Sri Our Pratap Suraj Granth, followed the Guru`s precept and took afresh to his spiritual pursuit. See, also, Bhai Gurdas, Varan, XI. 24, wherein the story is first alluded to.
