MADAN SINGH, BHAI (d. 1705), one of the martyrs of Chamkaur (7 December 1705), was, according to local tradition popular in and around Bhagrana in Fatehgarh Sahib district of the Punjab, the son of Bhai Diala, a weaver of that village. Bhai Diala had received instruction from Guru Tegh Bahadur at Chakk Nanaki (Anandpur Sahib) and had also served the Guru when the latter had travelled through the territory. His two sons, Madan and Katha (or Kotha, according to some sources), later went to Anandpur to be in the service of Guru Gobind Singh.
NAND SINGH or Anand Singh was still in his teens when he went to Anandpur to see Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708) and stayed on until his parents arrived to complain to the Guru that the boy, who had lately been married, had forsaken his bride and took little interest in family life. The Guru, records an eighteenth century chronicle, Gur Ratan Mdl, called the boy and instructed him with the help of two parables in the virtues of the life of a householder. Nand Singh thereafter led a married life remaining in the service of the Guru.
SATI DAS, BHAI (d. 1675), the martyr, was the younger brother of Diwan Mati Das. According to Bhatt Vahl Talauda he served Guru Tegh Bahadur as a cook. He was, under imperial warrant, detained along with the Guru at Dhamtan, as the latter was travelling to the eastern parts in 1665. He was again in attendance upon the Guru when, in 1675, the latter lefl Anandpur resolved to court martyrdom. The Guru and his companions were arrested on the way and taken to Delhi. Like his brother Mati Das, Sati Das refused to perjure his faith and was tortured to death. Wrapped up in cotton wool, he was set afire and roasted alive. This happened on 11 November 1675 the day Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed.
UDE SINGH (d. 1705), warrior and martyr, was the third of the sons of Bhai Mani Ram, a Parmar Rajput of `Alipur in Multan district (now in Pakistan). Ude Singh along with four of his other brothers received the rites of the Khalsa on the historic Baisakhi day, 30 March 1699. He was among the trusted 25 who constituted Guru Gobind Singh`s escort and took a leading part in battles fought in or around Anandpur after the creation of the Khalsa. Already in 1698 he had proved his skill as a musketeer when he killed a tiger during the chase.
HAR RAI, GURU (1630-1661), the seventh Guru of the Sikh faith, was the son of Baba Gurditta and grandson of Guru Hargobind, Nanak VI. He was born on 16 January 1630 at Kiratpur, in present day Ropar district of the Punjab. In 1640, he was married to Sulakkhani, daughter of Daya Ram of Anupshahr, in Bulandshahr district ofUttar Pradesh. He was gentle by nature and had a devout temperament. He was Guru Hargobind`s favourite grandchild, and he had been given the name of Har Rai by the Guru himself. Once, record old texts, Har Rai was returning home after his riding exercise. From a distance he saw Guru Hargobind sitting in the garden.
HARI RAM GUPTA, DR (1902-1992), teacher and historian, with Sikhs in the eighteenth century Punjab as his major theme in the exploration of which he spent a lifetime filled with unsparing labour. He was born in 1902 in a family of modest means living at the village of Bhureval in Naraingarh tahsil of Ambala district. He received his early education in rural schools. For higher education, he was able to transfer himself to metropolitan Lahore where after receiving his Master`s degree, he took appointment as a lecturer in history at Forman Christian College.
Sandhu, Gulzar Singh was born at Kotia Badia, district Ludhiana in 1933/5, his mother\'s native place. His family hails from the village of Soni in Hoshiarpur district. Both from the father\'s side and the mother\'s side, he draws upon a lineage of Jagirdars or fief-holders from the time of the Sikh rule, but by no means aristocrats in worldly possessions. Sandhu did his B.A. from the Khalsa College, Mahilpur, in 1953, and later did his M.A. in English Literature from the Punjab University. He migrated to Delhi and secured an editorial job in the well-known Punjabi monthly, Pritam. Later, he switched over to a sub-editor\'s job in the Punjabi section of the Publications Division of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
