MANOHAR DAS

MANOHAR DAS, a nineteenth century saint of Sangat Sahib Ke sect of the Udasi Sikhs, usually stayed at Kankhal, near Haridvar, where he collaborated with some other sadhus under the leadership of Santokh Das to establish a separate Udasi body called Sri Gur Naya Akhara Udasin, popularly known as Udasian da Chhota Akhara. Manohar Das won especially the respect of the rulers of the Phulklari states of Patiala, Nabha andJind. Maharaja Karam Singh of Patiala (1798-1845) once made to him a donation of 1,00,000 rupees which sum he spent on constructing a bridge over a turbulent seasonal stream on the outskirts of the town and raising buildings for the Chhota Akharaat Kankhal. He established two Udasi deras or monasteries, one at Patiala, in the vicinity of Qila Mubarak, and the other at Patti, in Amritsar district. Manohar Das also earned wide esteem for his humanitarian service as a practitioner of Ayurvedic medicine.
