He also listened regularly to the local granthi reading from the Akali, a newspaper floated by Akali reformers in May 1920. He had already received the pahul or vows of the Khalsa. He was one of the fifteen Sikhs of his village who joined Bhai Lachhman Singh Dharovali`s Jataa or batch of volunteers and laid down their lives for the liberation of Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib, on 20 February 1921.
