PURANMASHI, in Sanskrit pumimd, is the day of the full moon, the last day of the moon`s bright phases. The day has sanctity in the Indian tradition and several ceremo nial observances such as ritual bathing, fasting and giving away of charity are associated with it. In the Sikh system, no special significance attaches to the day. Sikh Scripture contains three compositions, all titled Thiti or Thitiri devoted to the lunar days. The one by Guru Nanak recounts day of the waning moon and thus makes no mention of Purnima.
RAVANA Rama has gone and Ravana has gone, who had a big family; the world is a dream and nothing is stable, saith Nanak. (Shalok M. 9, p. 1428) Ravana, who had one lakh sons and lakh and a quarter grandsons; there is not even a lamp and a wick in his house; having divine powers, the sun and moon worked in his kitchen and the god of fire washed his clothes. (Asa Kabir, p. 481) The kings greater than Ravana left the world in no time. (Sarang Kabir, p. 1251) The Lord made the enlightened person as the bridge, who plundered the Lanka-body in order to save it from the agonies of vices (demons).
SARSUTI (SARASVATI) Ganga, Jamuna, Godavari and Sarsuti måke effort to touch the dust of the feet of the saint. (They say: we are full of the din of sins and our ditt is removed by the dust of the feet of the saint). (Malar M. 4, p. 1263) In the Vedas, Sarasvati (Sarsuti) is mentioned as a river. In all probability, it was a sacred river of the early Aryans. As a river-goddess, Sarasvati is said to be the bestower of fertility, fatness and wealth. In later period, she is the wife of Brahma and goddess of speech and learning. See : Sarasvati.
ARATI, from Sanskrit aratrik, meaning the light or the vessel containing it which is waved before an idol, generally in the clockwise direction, accompanied by the chanting of mantras. This is also the name given the ceremony which for the Hindus is a mode of ritual worship to propitiate the deity. In the Sikh system, which totally rejects image worship, there is no sanction for this form of worship. An incident in this regard is often summoned from the Janam Sakhis, traditional accounts of Guru Nanak`s life. During his travels across Eastern India, Guru Nanak accompanied by the ministrel, Mardana, stopped near the temple of Jagannath, Lord of the Earth, which is the title of Lord Visnu, second god of the Hindu Triad.
ALLURING DAMSELS OF HEAVEN (APSARAS)If the clothes be of heat and cold and the food be of the wind, the alluring women of heaven be there everywhere. OR The alluring woffien of heaven may all go away. Still I may Praise Thee, O Lord! and the eagerness of my utterance may not diminish. (Var Majh, M. l, p. 142) The reference to the alluring women of heaven is, in fact, a reference to the Apsaras, who are said t.p reside in the heaven of Indra. They rose from the milk-ocean at the time of its churning.
BIKRAMI SAMMAT: A Calendar named after a Hindu king Vikramaditya. In Punjabi Vikrami is pronounced as Bikrami. Its abbreviation is Bk. The Hindus calculate their dates as per the Hindu astrology. Some ignorant Sikhs too adhere to this calendar. For a Sikh all the calendars have the same significance. During the time of Guru Sahib, Bikrami Sammat was in practice and now Gregorian calendar is used by the whole of the world.
BHISTA (BAHISHTA) He holds fasts, offers prayers and recites Kalimah, in this way Bhista (Bahishta) or heaven cannot be achieved..... Having comprehended himself, if one tries to know? others, then he can become a resident of Bhista..... (Asa Kabir, p. 480) You are impure and are not conscious about the Pure Lord, you have not known His secret. Kabir says you have thus missed Bhista and your mind is in consonance with Dojaka (Dozakha—hell). (Prabhati Kabir, p. 1350) Bhista or Bahishta is the heaven Qannat) of Muslims as described in the Koran.
DAS AVATARS (Ten incarnations of Vishnu) Under the God\'s Will ten incarnations were created. (Mani M. ], p. 1037) Ten incarnations were created out of Shunya. (Maru M. l, p. 1038) The ten incarnations led kingly lives...(Suhi M. 5, P. 747) The incarnations of the Satyuga : Machh, Kachh, Varaha and Narsingh. MACHH (MATSYA) AVATAR (fish incarnation) : According to Puranas, Vishnu appeared before Manu in the form of a fish and predicted the impending deluge and in this way saved him from universal cataclysm. The incarnation propelled Manu\'s ship across the waters to the Himalayas. KACHH (KURAMA) AVATAR (tortoise incarnation) : Vishnu assumed the form of a tortoise, which served as a resting place for the mountain Mandara.
GANA The Ganas, Gandharvas, Siddhas and saints...are engaged in uttering the infinite Praises of the Unapproachable and Unfathomab\'" Lord. (Devgandhari M. 5, p. 535) The Ganas and Gandharvas were emancipated through the remembrance of the Name of the Lord..... (Malar M. 3, p. 1259) Ganas or Gana-Devatas are the troops of deities. Nine classes of Ganas are Adityas, Viswe-devas, Vasus, Tushitas, Abhaswaras, Anilas, Maharajikas, Sadhyas and Rudras. These are inferior deities and are attendant upon god Shiva. The Lord of these Ganas is Ganesha (or Gana-pati), who, according to one legend, sprang from the scurf of the body of Parvati; and who is the god of wisdom and remover of obstacles.
HARCHANDAURI You see only Harchandauri (Mirage), there is nothing permanent. (Asa M. 5, p. 461) When you see it carefully, the world is like Harchandauri (mirage), therefore get only the gain of the meditation on the Name. (Asa M. 5, p. 402) It is said that the king Hari Chand, son of Trishanku because of his great generosity and justice, was given a boon of going directly to heaven along with his subjects. When he left for heaven with his city and subjects, the sage Narada highly praised him for his works, which made him infatuated with pride. As soon as the ego welled up within him, instead of going upwards his city began to fall down.
