KARAM SINGH (d.1923), Babar revolutionary, was born Narain Singh at the village of Daulatpur, in Jalandhar district. Narain Singh attended the village school and in 1912 left home to seek his fortune in Canada. In Canada he came under the influence of Asa Singh alias Mahlab Singh, who had been active in the Ghadr revolution. Fired will patriotic zeal, Narain Singh returned to India in 1914, and received at Nankana Sahib the rites of the Khalsa, and his new name Karam Singh. As an Akah jatheddr, he addressed meetings in the countryside inciting people to rise against the British.
MORCHA CHABIAN, campaign for the recovery of the keys of the Golden Temple treasury, marks a dramatic episode in the Sikhs` agitation in the early 1920`s for reforming the management of their places of worship. The Golden Temple at Amritsar, which had a government nominated sarbrdh or controller to manage it since 1849, came under Akali control in October 1920. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee nominated the old sarbrdh, Sundar Singh Ramgarhia, member of the Committee appointed to administer the affairs of the Golden Temple.
SAKA PANJA SAHIB, the heroic event which took place at Hasan Abdal railway station, close to the sacred shrine of Pahja Sahib on the morning of 30 October 1922 and which has since passed into folklore as an instance of Sikh courage and resolution. A nonviolent morcha or agitation to assert the right to felling trees for Guru ka Langar from the land attached to Gurdwara Guru ka Bagh in Amritsar district, already taken over from the priests by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee after a negotiated set dement, had started on 8 August 1922. At first Sikh volunteers were arrested and tried for trespass, but from 25 August police resorted to beating day after day the batches of Sikhs that came.This went on till 13 September when, on the intervention of the Punjab Governor, the beating stopped and the procedure of arrests resumed.
