MOHAN SINGH, SARDAR BAHADUR (1897-1961), aesthete, philanthropist and privy counsellor, was born on 6 June 1897 at Rawalpindi in a family of note founded by Sadhu Singh (d. 1798), who under Sardar Milkha Singh Thehpuria, founder of present town of Rawalpindi (now in Pakistan), was entrusted with the duty of providing rations for the Sikh troops. Sadhu Singh`s son, Buddha Singh (d. 1841), was a revenue official during the Sikh rule and was awarded a share in the octroi collections, later comput.cd into the grant of village Misnot in Rawalpindi tahsll.
SATI DAS, BHAI (d. 1675), the martyr, was the younger brother of Diwan Mati Das. According to Bhatt Vahl Talauda he served Guru Tegh Bahadur as a cook. He was, under imperial warrant, detained along with the Guru at Dhamtan, as the latter was travelling to the eastern parts in 1665. He was again in attendance upon the Guru when, in 1675, the latter lefl Anandpur resolved to court martyrdom. The Guru and his companions were arrested on the way and taken to Delhi. Like his brother Mati Das, Sati Das refused to perjure his faith and was tortured to death. Wrapped up in cotton wool, he was set afire and roasted alive. This happened on 11 November 1675 the day Guru Tegh Bahadur was executed.
BANDI BIR (Warrior Bound), a poem in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, based primarily on McGregor`s History of the Sikhs and Cunningham`s A History of the Sikhs was composed by him in October/November 1899. The poem celebrates the heroism of the Sikh warrior Banda Singh Bahadur (1670-1716). The opening stanzas tell how Guru Gobind Singh`s message had turned the Sikhs into a self respecting and fearless people.
GHUKKEVALI, village 21 km north of Amritsar (31°38`N, 74°52`E) and connected by a link road to the AmritsarAjnalaDera Baba Nanak road, has two historical shrines, sacred to Guru Arjan (1563-1606) and Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621-75), respectively. GURDWARA GURU KA BAGH, located in what was formerly called Guru kl Raur (raur is a Punjabi word for a barren tract of land), commemorates Guru Arjan`s stay here during his travel through the Majha country.
