MULTAN (SO012`N, 71°31`E), ancient city which had been a prominent centre of Muslim piety, was where according to Bhai Gurdas, Varan I. 4445, Guru Nanak met with some local Sufi saints. Travelling from Kartarpur, on the River Ravi, Guru Nanak first went to Achal Batala and thence to Multan. As the Guru arrived at Multan, the pirs of Multan brought to him a bowl over flowing to the brim with milk. By this gesture they meant to say that the place was already full of religious teachers.
PARTAPU, BHAI, a professional soldier, came to Guru Arjan, offered obeisance and spoke with folded hands, "Weilding of arms is my trade. Pray, advise me how best my soul can be saved." Guru Arjan, as recorded by Bhai Mani Singh, Sikhdn di Bhagat Maid, said, "When death comes no one will save you, and until then no one can harm you. Therefore, be fearless in battle, but fight only for a righteous cause. When out of battle, be charitable. Through charity your arms shall be blessed, through charity you shall earn renown." Bhai Partapu became a disciple and was so highly regarded for his devotion and piety that Bhai Gurdas made a special mention of him in his composition, the Varan.
RAHITNAME, plural of rahitndmd (rahit = conduct, stipulated conduct or way of life: name = letters, writings, manuals) is a term used in Punjabi in reference to a genre of writings specifying approved way of life for a Sikh. These writings, enunciating conduct and behaviour in accordance with the principles of the Sikh religion contain instructions regarding personal and social behaviour, applicable especially to those who have been admitted to the Khalsa brotherhood through ceremonies by the doubleedged sword. Sikhism laid as much stress on correct personal conduct as on the purity of mind. Guru Nanak for whom truth is synonymous with God recognizes the sovereignty of conduct (GG, 62).
SAMUND SINGH, BHAI (1901-1972), a leading Sikh musicologist of the twentieth century, trained in music under leading maestros of the art, Sikhs as well as Muslims, was born on 3 March 1901, at the village of Mulla Hamza, in Montgomery district, now in Pakistan. He started his training so young that for many years after he had started giving public performance, he was known as Kaka (child) Samund Singh. His father, Bhai Hazur Singh, was a ragi (musician) of repute and for accompaniment played on a string instrument called taus, so namd because of its peacock shape. For five generations, his ancestors had been performing kirtan at Gurdwara Janam Asthan at Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak.
