PARTAP SINGH, coming from the village of Sharikar in the district of Jalandhar, had won repute for his regularity of habit and strong sense of discipline. He had been a Viceroy commissioned officer (Jamadar) in the Punjab army. He had been able to spend his early years at school. He seemed well to understand the value of the three R`s and had sent up one of his sons to the university. That was Swaran Singh who received his Master`s degree in Physics at the University of the Punjab. He had a fabulous career as a minister in Jawaharlal Nehru`s government after Independence.
PEHLI PATSHAHI GURUDWARA, CHHOHATA MUFTI BAQAR This historical place, known as Dharamsala of the First Patshahi, is located in Mohalla Chohatta Mufti Baqar inside Delhi gate of Lahore city. In those days the locality was known as Siryanwala Bazaar or Chohatta Jawahar Mal. In 1567 Bikrami (1510 AD) Jagat Guru Nanak Dev Ji stayed in the house of Duni Chand, one, of his devotee. Guru Dev arrived on the day when Duni hand was performing the ritual of "Saradah" of his father. Guru Dev Ji dissuaded him from these fallacies and brought him into the folds of Sikhism.
SAHIB SINGH, PROFESSOR (1892-1977), grammarian and theologian, was born on 16 February 1892 in a Hindu family of the village of Phattevali in Sialkot district of undivided Punjab. He was originally named Natthu Ram by his father, Hiranand, who kept a small shop in the village. Soon the family shifted to Tharpal, another village in the same district. As a youth, Natthu Ram was apprenticed to the village Maulawi, Hayat Shah, son of the famous Punjabi poet, Hasham, upon whom his royal patron, Ranjit Singh, the Maharaja of the Punjab, had settled a permanent Jagir Winning a scholarship at his middle standard examination, Natthu Ram joined the high school at Pasrur where he received in 1906 the rites of the Khalsa and his new name Sahib Singh.
AKALI DAL, SHIROMANI (shiromani= exalted, foremost in rank; dal = corps, of akali volunteers who had shed fear of death), the premier political party of the modern period of Sikhism seeking to protect the political rights of the Sikhs, to represent them in the public bodies and legislative councils being set up by the British in India and to preserve and advance their religious heritage, came into existence during the Gurdwara reform movement, also known as the Akali movement, of the early 1920`s. Need for reform in the conditions prevalent in their places of worship had been brought home to Sikhs by the Singh Sabha upsurge in the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
