SIKH TRADITION (HISTORIOGRAPHY) begins with Janam Sakhis, the life stories of Guru Nanak (1469-1539). There is hardly any evidence of the tradition of history writing in ancient India, though in modern times attempts have been made at different levels to show the existence of somewhat vague historio graphic elements particularly in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata: but religious, mythological and allegorical legends and stories are so mixed up with the Indian religious thought and philosophy in them that it is extremely difficult to discern in them a pure hislorio graphical tradition. Similarly, the Puranas contain mostly mythological elements with a semblance of history.
TAHIL SINGH, BHAI (1875-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, was born in 1875, the eldest son of Bhai Chanda Singh and Mai Rukko, Kamboj residents of Nizampur village in Amritsar district.On the opening of the Lower Chenab Canal Colony in western Punjab (now Pakistan), the family moved, in 1892, to Chakk No. 38 Nizampur Deva Singhvala in Sheikhupura area. In 1902 Tahil Singh went abroad to Malaya (now Malaysia) where he worked as a watchman in Kuala Lumpur.
MOTA SINGH, BHAI (1902-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, was the son of Bhai Hari Singh and Mat Thakari, Ramdasia Sikhs, weavers by profession, originally of Bassi village in Hoshiarpur district, who had migrated for better living to Chakk No. 18 Bahoru in Sheikh upura district (now in Pakistan). Mota Singh was born on 15 Poh 1959 Bk/28 December 1902 in his mother`s village Thandhevala in FIroxpur district. As he grew up, he learnt enough Gurmukhi to be able to read the Sikh granth fluently.
IBRAHIM, SHAIKH (Shaikh Farid of the Janam Sakhi), twelfth in succession from the famous Sufi saint, Shaikh Farid udDin GanjiShakar (1173-1266), held the seat of the earlier Shaikh at Pakpattan in the present Sahiwal (former Montgomery) district of Pakistan when Guru Nanak (1469-1539) was travelling in these parts. Shaikh Ibrahim, like his illustrious predecessor, lived a pious and austere life and was on this account known among his followers and admirers as Farid II. Guru Nanak, accompanied at the rebeck by Bhai Mardana, was singing God`s praises in the forest on the outskirts of Pakpattan, when Kamal, a follower of Shaikh Ibrahim, collecting firewood for the khdnaqdh kitchen, came where sat Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana.
