NAINA SINGH, AKALI, eighteenth century Nihang warrior esteemed as much for his piety as for his valour. His special title to fame rests on the fact that he was the guardian of the celebrated Akali Phula Singh (1761-1823) whom he trained in the martial arts. Little is known about his early life except that his original name was Narain Singh and that he received khande di pahul or the rites of the Khalsa at the hands of Jathedar Darbara Singh (d. 1734), leader of the Sikh fighting forces prior to Nawab Kapur Singh. Naina Singh was a junior leader in the Shahid misl, with headquarters at Damdama Sahib, Talvandi Sabo, in present day Bathinda district.
GURU NANAK BANS PRAKASH, by Sukhbasi Ram Bedi (c. 1758C.1848), an Udasi saint and a descendant of Guru Nanak, is a versified biography of Guru Nanak with considerable detail about his descendants as well. Two manuscript copies of the work are extant one at the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and the second in the Central Public Library, Patiala. Of these, the former which is dated 1886 Bk/AD 1829 was copied by one Achhar Singh. The work has since been published (1986) by Punjabi University, Patiala. The author, according to his own statement (pp. 50613), was the son of Kabali Mall, seventh in the line of descendants of Lachhmi Chand (LakhmT Das), the younger son of Guru Nanak (1469-1539).
SWARAN SINGH (1907-1994). Tall and wiry, Sardar Swaran Singh, was born on 19 August 1907 in a farming family of the village of Shankar in Jalandhar district. He was married to Charan Kaur (1925). The family laid much store by education. One of the two sons was sent up to attend the Government College at Lahore, where he picked a prestigious Master`s degree in one of the sciences. That was Swaran Singh who had a legendary career as a teammate of India`s charismatic prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Swaran Singh had taken his intermediate from Randhir College, Kapurthafa.
MAHIMA PRAKASH, by Sarup Das Bhalla, is a versified account, in Gurmukhi script, of the lives of the ten Gurus, completed according to inner evidence, in 1833 Bk/AD 1776. Three copies of the manuscript, are still extant: one (No. 176) in the Languages Department, Punjab, Patiala, the second (No. 792) in the Punjab State Archives, Patiala, and third (No. 3200) in the Khalsa College Library, Amritsar. A fourth copy of the manuscript existed in the Sikh Reference Library, Amritsar, until it perished in 1984. The work has since been published (1970) in two volumes by the Languages Department, Punjab, Patiala.
PRAVRTTIMARGA : NIVRTTIMARGA. In ancient religious texts four madrsas or paths or roads to life are demarcated: the path of action for personal gratification, leading to sensuous pleasures (cf. J5GXVI. 16); (ii) the path of action in the form of observance of religious rituals, with a view to reaping the fruit thereof (cf. BG II. 4243; IX.20); (iii) the path of knowledge leading to the realization of the Supreme Spirit and the sense of detachment to the mundane pleasures resulting in total renunciation of worldly objects and actions; (iv) the path of action following attainment of knowledge with a sense of detachment to the result of the action performed.
