AMAR KATHA, of unknown authorship, comprises a mixture of diverse hagiographic traditions bearing on the life of Guru Nanak. The work remains unpublished, but several manuscripts are known to exist: for instance, two of them, dated AD 1818 and 1872, respectively, are preserved in the Guru Nanak Dev University Library at Amritsar, one, dated 1877, in the Punjabi University Museum, Patiala, one, dated 1870, at the Panjabi Sahitya Akademi, Ludhiana, and one, dated 1825, in the Sikh Reference Library until it perished in the Army attack in 1984. Compiled probably towards the end of the eighteenth century, Amar Katha draws upon all the prevalent janam sakhi cycles such as Puratan, Miharban and BaJa along with the interpolations introduced by the Handalias (q.v.).This miscellany narrates Guru Nanak`s life in terms of the usual legend, myth and miracle.
PAN SAU SAKHI, a collection of five hundred anecdotes (panj = five; sau = hundred; sdkhi = anecdote), attributed to Bhai Ram Kuir (1672-1761), a descendant of Bhai Buddha, renamed Bhai Gurbakhsh Singh as he received the rites of the Khalsa at the hands of Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708). It is said that during his long association with the Guru, Ram Kuir had heard from his lips many anecdotes concerning the lives of the Gurus which he used to narrate to Sikhs after his return to his village, Ramdas, in Amritsar district, after Anandpur had been evacuated in 1705. Bhai Sahib Singh is said to have reduced these sdkhis to writing. Later, they were split into five parts, each comprising one hundred stories whence the title "Sau Sakhi" or A Hundred Stories gained currency.
SAKHlAN BHAI ADDAN SHAH is a collection of sakhis or anecdotes concerning Bhai Addan Shah, a celebrated saint of the Sevapanthi sect. The extant manuscripts of the work are all undated, but the surmise is that these were written around the middle of the eighteenth century when Bhai Addan Shah was putting up at Munde Sharih in Lahore addressing sahgats and preaching the Sikh way of life. The manuscripts are also silent about their authorship, but tradition attributes them to Bhai Sahaj Ram, a disciple of Addan Shah, and himself a renewed Sevapanthi saint. The work was first published in 1886 at Matba Gulshan Punjab, Rawalpindi, and reprinted in 1958 by the SevapanthiAddan Shahi Sabha, Patiala.
