SUNDAR SINGH JATHEDAR, BHAI (1869-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, was the son of Bhai Bishan Singh and Mai Indar Kaur of village Dhudial, in Jalandhar district. His ancestors came from Bandala village in Amritsar district where they had served in the chief ship of Sardar Baghel Singh of the Karorsirighia misl. Sundar Singh learnt Gurmukhi in the village gurdwara and fondly recited passages from the Sikh texts. He had received the vows of the Khalsa at Sri Anandpur Sahib and had since punctiliously observed die Khalsa rahit. On 19 February 1921, as the call for action came, he led out a 15 strong jataa and joined Bhai Lachhman Singh Dharovali`s men on their way to Nankana Sahib.
SURAIN SINGH, BHAI (1895-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, came from Chakk No. 80 Nizampur Mula Singhvala, district Sheikhupura. He was the second of the six children of Bhai Ram Singh and Mai Hukam Kaur. He learnt Gurmukhi from the village priest and was initiated into the Khalsa Panth at a divan held at the nearby village of Nizampur Deva Singhvala. He served for some time in the army during the Great War (1914-18), and after his release reverted to the family occupation of agriculture.
UJAGAR SINGH, BHAI (1902-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, was born on 10 June 1902, the son of Bhai Jagat Singh and Mat Dial Kaur of Chakk 64 Bandala Nihaloana in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad) district of Pakistan. He learnt Gurmukhi at the village gurdwara and was able fluently to recite passages from the Guru Granth Sahib and stories of the Sikh martyrs. Ujagar Singh grew up into a handsome youth, strong of limb and fair complexioned.
CHALI MUKTE, lit. forty (chalf) liberated ones (mukte), is how a band of 40 brave Sikhs who laid down their lives fighting near the dhab or lake of Khidrana, also called Isharsar, on 29 December 1705 against a Mughal force in chase of Guru Gobind Singh are remembered in Sikh history and daily in the Sikh ardas or supplicatory prayer offered individually or at gatherings at the end of all religious services. Guru Gobind Singh, who had watched the battle from a nearby mound praised the martyrs` valour and blessed them as Chali Mukte, the Forty Immortals. After them Khidrana became Muktsar the Pool of Liberation.
MADAN SINGH, BHAI (d. 1705), one of the martyrs of Chamkaur (7 December 1705), was, according to local tradition popular in and around Bhagrana in Fatehgarh Sahib district of the Punjab, the son of Bhai Diala, a weaver of that village. Bhai Diala had received instruction from Guru Tegh Bahadur at Chakk Nanaki (Anandpur Sahib) and had also served the Guru when the latter had travelled through the territory. His two sons, Madan and Katha (or Kotha, according to some sources), later went to Anandpur to be in the service of Guru Gobind Singh.
MAGH SINGH, BHAI (d. 1924), one of the martyrs of Jaito morcha, was the son of Bhai Sham Singh and Mai Dharmon, farmers of the village of Lande in Moga tahsil (sub-division) of the present Moga district. In his early youth Magh Singh had enlisted in the army and had served in the Peshawar sector of the North-West Frontier Province for a few years. He had been admitted to the rites of the Khalsa initiation during his army service, and had also learnt to read and write Punjabi before he left the army to resume his ancestral occupation, agriculture.
NAND SINGH. BHAI (1888-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, was born on 15 Savan 1945 Bk/29July 1888, the son of Bhai Bhagvan Singh and Mai Nihal Kaur of Thothian village in Amritsar district. He learnt Urdu at school. After the death of his father in 1902, he as the eldest male member of the family had to engage in farming until his three younger brothers grew up to undertake the responsibility. He then joined the army, trained as a unit signaller and served during the First Great War (1914-18).
