KOLAYAT, popularly pronounced Kulait, a town 52 km southwest of Bikaner (28"04`N, 73021`E), is famous for a temple dedicated to Kapila Muni, an ancient Hindu sage to whom the Sankhya system of philosophy is attributed. According to Sikh chroniclers, Guru Nanak visited Kolayat. Guru Gobind Singh, at the time of his travels through Rajasthan, is said to have stayed here for twelve days. Here Bhai Daya Singh and Bhai Dharam Singh, who had been to Ahmadnagar to deliver to Emperor Aurahgzib the Zafamamah, the Guru`s letter in Persian verse, rejoined him. However, no Sikh shrine existed here until 1968 when some Sikh residents of the area, led by a Sikh colonizer of Kolayat, acquired a plot of land and constructed a Gurudwara. The Gurudwara is a modest oneroom building with a paved platform all around it. Sikh settlers of the surrounding area gather to celebrate Guru Nanak`s birth anniversary on the fullmoon day of Kartik (OctoberNovember) every year.
KHADUR SAHIB, an old village 19 km cast ofTarnTaran (31°27`N, 74"56`E) in Amrilsar district of the Punjab, is sacred to the first three Gurus. Guru Nanak is said to have visited Khadiir once to meet his disciple, Bhai Jodha, a Khaihra Jatt. It was through Bhai Jodha`s example that Bhai Lahina (later, Guru Angad) was led to seek Guru Nanak`s precept. Guru Angad`s father, Baba Pheru, liaving left his ancestral place, MaltcdiSarai, and the temporary abode at Harikc, had made Khadur his home. Baba Pheru`s sister Mai BharaT was already married in Khadur; his son, Bhai Lahina, was now married here in 1519. After the anointment of Bhai Lahina as Guru Angad in 1539, he, following Guru Nanak`s instructions, returned to Khadur, which became the centre of the Sikh faith. He stayed here till his death in 1552. It was at Khadur thai Amar Das served him as a disciple and was in turn himself anointed Guru. Khadur Sahib has several gurudwaras commemorating the holy Gurus. GURDWARA TAPIANA SAHIB, 200 metres north of the village, marks the site where Guru Nanak, accompanied, according to local tradition, by Bhai Bala and Bhai Mardana, preached to a gathering of devotees. It was here again that the events of Guru Nanak`s life arc said to have been recorded, in the form of aJanam SakhT, as narrated by Bhai Bala. A small platform near the Gurdwara marks the spot where Bhai Bala`s mortal remains were cremated. The Gurdwara comprises a square hall on a high plinth. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated on a canopied throne of white marble. A lotus dome with an ornamental goldplated pinnacle and an umbrellashaped finial tops the hall, which also has a squareshaped domed kiosk above each of its corners. In front of the hall, in the middle of a oneacre brickpaved compound, is the sarovar. GURDWARA TAP ASTIIAN SRI GURU ANGAD DEV Ji, opposite Gurdwara Tapiana Sahib, marks the site where Guru Arigad used to sit in meditation. It is a square domed hall with domed cubicles at top corners. The central dome has a goldplated pinnacle, an umbrellashaped finial and a khandd at the apex. GURDWARA DARBAR SAHIB ANGITHA SAHIB, within a highwalled compound entered through an old twostoreyed gateway, comprises a square domed sanctum with a circumambulatory passage and a hall in the front. The sanctum marks the site where Guru Angad`s body was cremated. Close by is a square domed marble pavilion called Killa Sahib or Khaddi Sahib. This was a weaver`s pit, khaddi in Punjabi, where Baba (later Guru) Amar Das, carrying a pitcher of water for Guru Arigad during a pitch dark night, stumbled against a killa or peg. An old well near the gateway, is called Bibi AmaroJi da Khuh, or the Well of Bibi Amaro, Guru Angad`s daughter, whose hymnsinging had inspired Baba Amar Das to seek spiritual solace at the feet of Guru Angad. GURDWARA MAT BHARAl, about 100 metres to the west of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, constructed where Mai Bharai`s house once stood, marks another site consecrated by Guru Angad. According to Sikh chronicles, Guru Angad, as he arrived at Khadur, from Kartarpur where Guru Nanak had anointed him his successor, decided to go into undisturbed meditation for some time. He did not go to his own house, but shut himself up in a small room in Mai Bharai`s house and locked the door from inside. Sangats that went to Kartarpur to sec the new Guru were led to Khadur by BhaT Buddha who, risking the Guru`s displeasure, tore a hole into one of the walls of the room in Mai Bharai`s house. He bowed at the Guru`s feet and announced how the Sikhs waited outside for a sight of him. Guru Angad came out of his temporary seclusion to meet the disciples. The new building of Gurdwara Mai Bharal, constructed during the 1980`s, is a highccilinged hall with a gallery at midheight. Its walls are lined with streaked marble slabs. The sanctum at the far end of the hall is topped by three storeys of square pavilions and a dome all covered with white gla`/ed tiles. GURDWARA MALL AKHARA, at the northern edge of the village, marks the site where wrestling bouts for the youth were held in the time of Guru Arigad. Mallakhdrd literally means wrestlers` pit. Here the Guru also taught children Gurmukhi letters. Even now young scholars are trained here in reciting the Guru Granth Sahib. The present building is a square domed hall within a lowwalled compound. GURDWARA THARA SAHIB GURU AMAR DAS, a small domed room, is built on a high plinth in the middle of a marblefloored platform. The Thara, platform in Punjabi, marks the spot where Baba (Guru) Amar Das used to sit in meditation when he was not physically engaged in serving Guru Arigad or his Sikhs. All these gurudwaras arc managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee through a local committee.
KARTARPUR. village on the right bank of tlie River Ravi in the present Sialkot district of Pakistan and usually called Kartarpur Ravl to distinguish it from another town of tlie same name in Jalandhar district of Indian Punjab, is sacred to Guru Nanak (14691539) to whom it owed its origin and who settled here at the end of his long peregrinations in India and abroad to prcacli the word of God. Guru Nanak spent the last two decades of his life with his wife and children at Kartarpur which became the principal seat of the Sikh faith. It was here that Bhai Lahina, later Guru Arigad, came to receive instruction and it was here that, after nominating (Guru) Arigad his spiritual sucessor, he passed away on Assu vadi 10, 1596 Bk/7 September 1539. Most of the habitation was washed away by the everencroaching Ravi whereupon the Guru`s descendants and followers moved to Dera Baba Nanak, a new town they had raised on the other side of the river. The threestoreyed tall building ofGurdwara Kartarpur Sahib Ravi PatshahT I erected later at Kartarpur can still be seen from the high embankment marking the IndoPakistan boundary north ofDcra Baba Nanak, but it has been inaccessible to visitors and pilgrims from India since the partition of 1947.
KARNAL (29°42`N, 76"59`E), a district town of Haryana, situated along the historic Grand Trunk road, 123 km north of Delhi, is sacred to Guru Nanak. Gurdwara MarijT Sahib commemorates his visit to Karnal in 1515 when he held a religious discourse with one Shaikh Tahir (referred to as Tatihar in the ValdyatvdH Janam Sdkhi, which, however, places him in Panipat). The Guru pointed out that the practice of worshipping graves and tombs of holy men amounted to a breach of the injunctions of Islam. Guru Tegh Bahadur is also believed to have visited the shrine in 1670 during his journey from Delhi to Lakhnaur. Raja Gajpat Singh ofJmd (17381789) had a gurudwara raised on the site of the Mariji Sahib. An assembly hall on the first floor and the langar and a twostoreycd concrete pavilion were added later. The Gurdwara is affiliated to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, which administers it through a local committee.
KARHA SAHIB, a village 11 km west of Pehova (29"59`N, 76°35`E) in Kurukshetra district of Haryana, was visited by four of the Sikh Gurus. Guru Nanak came here during his travels to the eastern parts. Chaudhari Kalu of this village became a follower and is said to have constructed a bdoK his honour. The second of the Sikh Gurus to visit this village was Guru Hargobind. The local tradition places Guru Tegh Bahadur`s visit during his last journey to Delhi, but it is more likely that he passed through this village in the course of one of his earlier travels across the area. Guru Gobind Singh was here in 1702 when he visited the shrines established here in memory of the earlier Gurus. Bhai Udai Singh, the ruler ofKaithal (d. 1843), got three gurudwaras constructed in the same compound and made land grants for their maintenance. These simple structures were replaced by more elegant buildings during the early 1970`s by Sant Jivan Singh of Pehova. The three shrines are sometimes jointly called Triveni Sahib. Two identical shrines in the northern and southern parts of the walled compound are dedicated to Guru Nanak and Guru Tegh Bahadur, respectively. Gurdwara Patshahi Chhevin is in the centre to the east, thus forming the apex of the triangle. The entire compound has a marble floor. The Gurdwaras are affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, but arc for the present managed by the successors of Sant Baba Jivan Singh Scvavalc.
KANGANPUR, a large village along KasurLodhrari railway line in Lahore district of Pakistan, had a historical Sikh shrine dedicated to Guru Nanak. Local tradition established Kariganpur as the locale of an episode given in the Purdtan Janam Sdkhi. It is said that once Guru Nanak accompanied by Bhai Mardana came to this village, but the villagers treated them with gross indifference. They did not even let them put up in the village. Before departing, the Guru blessed them saying, "Vasde mho May you live happily here" and went to the next village, Manak Deke, 3 km away. The inhabitants of this village warmly welcomed the visitors and extended to them their wonted hospitality. On leaving this village, Guru Nanak rcmakred, "Ujjarjdo May you be dispersed." Bhai Mardana was puxzlcd and questioned the Master about his strange way of blessing the wicked and cursing the virtuous. The Guru explained that in the former case he had wished the illmannered residents of Kariganpur to stay where they were, so that they did not spread their sullenness to people elsewhere, whereas he expected the people of Manak Deke to spread goodness by their gentle example. The Gurdwara Sahib at Kariganpur used to attract devotees especially on the first of every Bikrami month. It was the site of a largelyattended religious festival on the first of the month ofChet (midMarch) every year, until it was abandoned in AugustSeptembcr 1947 in consequence of the partition of India.
KAMALPUR, village 22 km souihwest of Samana (30011`N, 76°irE) in the Punjab, commemorates both Guru Nanak and Guru Hargobind. Two separate shrines mark the sites visited by them. The one dedicated to Guru Nanak is only a small Manji Sahib on a mound to the north of the village. The other, Gurdwara Patshahi VI, situated in a large haveK, again to the north of the village, was constructed and endowed by Maharaja Karam Singh (17981845) of Patiala. The building, renovated in 1969, comprises a large hall including a square sanctum on the ground floor, a hall on thefirst floor, and a domed pavilion on the second floor above the sanctum. The dome is lined with multicoloured glazed tiles. A 65metre square sarovarwas added in 197980. The Gurdwara owns 25 acres of land. It is affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee but is at present administered by the followers of Baba Gurmukh Singh who constructed the sarovar. A largely attended assembly takes place on every amdvasyd, the last day of the dark half of the month.
HARIPURA, an old village 15 km west of Abohar (30°8`N, 74°12`E) in Firozpur district of the Punjab, is sacred to Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. A deep pool of water to the north of the village was an ancient place of pilgrimage known as Bad Tirath. Guru Nanak had visited it during his travels in the region. So did Guru Gobind Singh in 1706 soon after the battle of Muktsar. Gurdwara Charan Pak Patshahi I on the bank of the Bad Tirath was established in 1876. The present building was constructed in FebruaryMarch 1947 when the pool was also lined. The Guru Granth Sahib is scaled on a platform at the far end of a flatroofed rectangular hall. The Gurdwara is affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. There arc very few Sikh families in Haripura itself, but Sikh and nonSikh devotees from the surrounding villages gather on every new moon to have a dip in the sacred pool and hold a divan. Larger gatherings take place on the newmoon day in Phagun (JanuaryFebruary) and on the fullmoon day of Kattak to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.

DERA BABA NANAK (30° 2`N, 75° 2`E), on the left bank of the River Ravi in Gurdaspur district of the Punjab, is sacred to Guru Nanak, who on the conclusion of one of his long travels arrived here and sat near a well owned by Ajitta Randhava, the chaudhan or headman of Pakkhoke Randhave, village where the Guru`s family had been staying with his wife`s parents. Around the spot where he had halted grew the town of Dera Baba Nanak. As the news of the Guru`s arrival spread, people from the surrounding villages started pouring in everincreasing numbers to see him and receive his blessing. Bhai Ajitta requested him to settle down permanently at or near Pakkhoke. This led to the foundation of a habitation across the Ravi, which the Guru named Kartarpur. On his death, on 7 September 1539, his ashes were buried near Kartarpur and a monument raised over them. But the monument was soon after washed away by a flood in the river. Guru Nanak`s elder son, Baba Sri Chand, who was then staying at Pakkhoke, got the urn containing the ashes salvaged, reburied it close to Ajitta`s well and raised over the spot a mud hut which came to be called Dehra or samadh of Guru Nanak. Later Baba Dharam Das, the sonofGuruNanak`s younger son, Lakhmi Das, founded a new habitation around this Dehra and named it Dera Baba Nanak. There are two historical gurdwaras in the town now. GURDWARA DARBAR SAHIB, in the centre of the town, comprises three separate memorials. The well which originally belonged to Bhai Ajitta Randhava still exists and is reverently called Sarji Sahib. Pilgrims take its water home in the belief that it possesses curative properties. The second memorial is the Kirtan Asthan, a rectangular hall, which marks the site where Guru Arjan had sat rapt in kirtan when visiting Dera Baba Nanak for condolence on the death of Baba Dharam Das. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated in the hall. The central shrine, called Thara Sahib, marks the thara, or platform, on which Guru Nanak had sat when he first came to Ajitta`s well and where, later, Baba Sri Chand buried his father`s ashes. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated here in a small square pavilion with a pinnacled lotus dome under an overhanging gilded canopy. The whole pavilion is covered with goldplated metal sheets with some of the hymns of Guru Nanak embossed on them. The Thara Sahib is at one end of a recently constructed spacious hall, above which, over the sanctum, is a square domed room with an ornamental arched coping and domed kiosks at the corners. The entire exterior above the roof level of this room is covered with goldplated metal sheets. The goldwork on top as well as on the sanctum was got executed in 1827 by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who also made endowments in cash and land for the maintenance of the shrine. The Gurdwara is administered by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee through a local committee. Special divans take place on every amavasya, the last day of the dark half of the lunar month, and all major anniversaries, especially the one marking the death of Guru Nanak, are observed. But the most important annual event is the fair celebrating the Baisakhi festival. A handwritten copy of the Guru Granth Sahib is preserved in this Gurdwara. It has 1660 pages, each page having a handsomely illuminated border. GURDWARA LANGAR MANDIR CHOLA SAHIB, in the eastern part of the town, is connected with a relic a chola, or cloak, believed to have been presented to Guru Nanak by a Muslim devotee at Baghdad. The chola, bearing some Qura`nic verses and Arabic numerals, arranged in the form of charms embroidered on it, was procured from Baghdad by Baba Kabali Mall, a descendant of Guru Nanak, it is said. It was brought to Dera Baba Nanak on 20 Phagun 1884 Bk / 1 March 1828. A special shrine was constructed where the Chola Sahib was kept and where it was put on display at the time of a fair held from 21 to 23 Phagun, early March, every year. From the Guru ka Langar which serves the pilgrims, the shrine has come to be known as Gurdwara Langar Mandir Chola Sahib. It was under private management of the resident descendants of Guru Nanak. As the Gurdwara reform movement got under way, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee claimed possession of the shrine, but the owners resisted. In the end, the control of the Gurdwara passed to the Committee, but Chola Sahib, the relic, remained with the family. It is now displayed in a glass case in a private house, about 50 metres from the Gurdwara, attended in rotation by three Bedi families living there. Gurdwara Langar Mandir Chola Sahib is now administered by the local committee managing Gurdwara Darbar Sahib. The 3day annual fair and Guru ka Langar are held as usual in the adjoining compound. The Gurdwara compound also has within it the samadh of Baba Kabali Mall and an octagonshaped old well. The local belief is that the water of this well cures women whose offspring die during infancy.
