MUZANG, now part of Lahore in Pakistan, was, during the seventeenth century, a village about 2.5 km south of the old city. Guru Hargobind (1595-1644) stopped here for some time during his visit to Lahore. Gurdwara Chheviri Patshahi, later built here to commemorate the Guru`s visit, was affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. On 12 August 1947, it suffered a mob attack in which several Sikhs attempting to defend it were killed. The shrine was abandoned in the aftermath of the partition of India.
PADHANA, pronounced Bharhana, a village barely half a kilometre on the Pakistan side of the IndoPak border, is sacred to Guru Hargobind (1595-1694) who once stayed here during his journey from Lahore to Amritsar. The historical Gurdwara Patshahi VI commemorating the Guru`s visit remained affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee until it was abandoned consequent upon the partition of the Punjab in 1947.
PARTITION OF THE PUNJAB (1947) was the result of the overwhelming support the Muslim demand for the creation of Pakistan, an independent and sovereign Muslim State, had gathered in India. When the word Pakistan was first mentioned, the idea had been laughed out of court, even by the Muslims themselves. But within the next half a decade, it had annexed almost the total support of the Muslim population. During the discussions in England that preceded the passing of the Government of India Act 1935, Pakistan had been mentioned, but no one had taken it as a serious proposition.
PUNJAB BOUNDARY COMMISSION was one of the two high powered panels set up under Governor General Lord Mountbatten`s partition plan of 3 June 1947 (the other one being the Bengal Boundary Commission) to divide the Punjab between India and Pakistan, the two new states that were being carved out. The almost universal support of Muslim masses to the Muslim League at the elections held during the winter of 1945-46 had reinforced the League`s demand for an independent Pakistan, comprising the six provinces of Bengal and Assam in the east and the Punjab, the North-West Frontier Province, Sindh and Baluchistan in the northwest.
RADCLIFFE AWARD, under which the dividing line between the West (Pakistan) Punjab and the East (Indian) Punjab was drawn, is so called after the name of the Chairman of the Punjab Boundary Commission, Sir Cyril Radcliffe, an eminent British jurist especially invited to fix the boundaries between the newly created States, India and Pakistan. The Commission was also charged with the delimiting of the boundaries of the provinces of Bengal and Punjab.

RAMPURA KALAN, a village in Lahore district of Pakistan hardly 1.5 km from the Indo Pakistan border, had a historical Gurdwara commemorating the visit of Guru Hargobind (1595-1644), who once halted here during one of his journeys between Amritsar and Lahore. The shrine which had been looked after by a line of Udasi priests came under the control of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee during the Gurdwara Reform movement of the 1920`s, but had to be abandoned at the time of mass migrations caused by the partition of the Punjab in 1947.
AHMADlYAH MOVEMENT, started in the late nineteenth century as a reforming and rejuvenating current in Islam, originated in Qadian in Gurdaspur district of the Punjab. In the 1880`s, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, son of the chief landowning family of Qadian, after he had received revelations and preached a renewal of Islamic faith, began to draw followers. Although he had been educated traditionally by tutors in Qur`an and hadith, Ahmad had been sent to Sialkot by his father to serve his apprenticeship as a law clerk and to train for the legal profession. Unsuccessful in his work and while becoming increasingly religious, Ahmad came in contact with Christian missionaries and became convinced that they posed a threat to Islam.
