MEHRAJ, also spoken as Mahiraj or Marhaj, is a village 6 km northwest of Rampura Phul (30°16`N, 75°14`E) in Bathinda district founded in 1627 by Bhai Mohan (d. 1630), aJatt of the Siddhu clan, with the blessings and help of Guru Hargobind. According to Sikh tradition, Mohan with his tribe wanted to settle down in this area but the Bhullars, the local dominating tribe, resisted. Mohan sought Guru Hargobind`s blessing and succeeded in founding a village which he called Mehraj after the name of his greatgrandfather. The Bhullars tried to dislodge him, but were driven away with Guru Hargobind`s help. In the battle Guru Hargobind had to fight here against an imperial force led by Lalla Beg on 16 December 1634, he took up position around a pool of water about 3 km south of Mehraj. Sikhs, though vastly outnumbered, defeated the attacking force. Lalla Beg and several of his officers and men were killed. Guru Hargobind had them buried according to Muslim rites while he had the Sikhs fallen in action cremated. A tower subsequently raised indicates the sites where cremation and burial took place. GURDWARA CHHOTA GURUSAR TAMBU SAHIB, one kilometre southwest of the village, marks the site where Guru Hargobind had his tent (tambu, in Punjabi) set up at the time of his first visit to this place. It is a modestlooking shrine built on a low mound and managed by the village sangat. GURDWARA GURUSAR MEHRAJ marks the site Of Guru Hargobind`s camp during the battle of Mehraj. According to Cur Bilds Chhevm Pdtshdhi, Guru Hargobind had himself named this place Gurusar and declared it a place of pilgrimage, appointing a Ravidasi Sikh to look after it. The old building constructed by Maharaja Hira Singh of Nabha (18431911) was replaced during the 1980`s by the successors of Sam Gurmukh Singh Scvavale. Tlie new building, inside a walled compound, comprises a highccilingcd assembly hall, with the sanctum in the middle marked off by massive square columns and wide arches. Above the sanctum is a domed pavilion lined with glazed tiles and topped by a goldplated pinnacle and an umbrellashaped finial with a khandd at the apex. Domed kiosks adorn the hall corners. The Gurdwara, endowed with 250 acres of land, is affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. People from the surrounding villages throng for a dip in the holy sarovar on every Monday.

KOT DHARMU, village 13 km south of the district town Mansa (29°59`N, 75°23`E), in the Punjab, has a historical shrine, Gurdwara Sulisar Sahib Patshahi Nauvin, commemorating the visit of Guru Tegh Bahadur. According to the Sakhl Pothi, Guru Tegh Bahadur stopped here near a pool on his way back from Talvandi Sabo. During the night two thieves broke into the camp and stole the Guru`s horse. But as they led the animal away, they felt they could see nothing. They were thus easily apprehended by the Sikhs the next morning. Brought before the Guru, they confessed their misdeed. Guru Tegh Bahadur said, "Why did you come to steal during the night? Take what you desire now." But the thieves overcome by remorse replied, "Our only wish now is to take the punishment in accordance with our deserts." As they were passing through a thorny thicket over a mound near by, one of them killed himself running against a dry splintered branch of J``and tree (Prosopis spicigera). Devotees later established a memorial platform and called the place Sulisar {suH in Punjabi means a cross or a stake). A small Manji Sahib subsequently constructed over this platform still exists. Here is seated Guru Granth Sahib. Special gatherings take place on the tenth of the brighter half of each lunar month as well as on the first of every Bikrami month. An annual fair is held on the last day of Poh (midJanuary). The Gurdwara is affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. A grand new building has come up since.
KHAN CHHAPRI (locally known as simply Chhapri), a small village 8 km west of Goindval (31°22`N, 75°9`E) in Amritsar district of the Punjab, was visited successively by Guru Arigad, Guru Amar Das, Guru Arjan and Guru Hargobind. Originally named Khanpur, the habitation had once been reduced to a ruined mound. During the time of Guru An gad`s stay at Khadur Sahib, as records Sarup Das Bhalla, Mahimd Prakdsh, once a severe drought hit the place. A yogi claiming supernatural powers and jealous of the Guru`s popularity, incited the peasants against him saying, "You honour him [Guru Arigad], a Khatri householder, as guru in preference to an ascetic like me. Now go to him for rain, or expel him from the place and I shall get you rain." As the peasants went to the Guru, he spoke to them, "Rain and drought are by God`s Will. It cannot rain simply by my saying so." Guru Arigad thereupon left Khadur accompanied by Bhai Buddha and made his temporary abode on the mound of Khanpur. Yet there was no rain at Khadur and the people were becoming critical of the yogi. Meanwhile, Baba (later Guru) Amar Das, who was at Goindval came to Khadur and, learning about what had happened, rebuked the peasants for their ill treatment oftlie Guru. It so happened that as the yogi was being chastised by the villagers, it began raining. Baba Amar Das and the repentant peasants came to Khanpur and escorted the Guru back to Khadur Sahib. Once during the winter season, Guru Arjan (15631606), while travelling in these parts with a few attendants, was suddenly caught in rain and storm. Bhai Hcma, poor inhabitant of Khanpur, extended the hospitality of his humble thatched hut, chhapn in Punjabi, to them. The chhapn was consecrated and Khanpur became Khan Chhapn. Guru Hargobind also visited the place on his way to the Malva. The present building of Gurdwara Chhapri Sahib, raised during the 1970`s, comprises a marblefloored liall, with the sanctum in the middle. The dome above the sanctum is lined with porcelain chips and topped with a goldplated pinnacle. In front of the hall is a spacious, marbled terrace and a small octagonal sarovar. The Gurdwara is administered by a local committee under the auspices of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
HARIPURA, an old village 15 km west of Abohar (30°8`N, 74°12`E) in Firozpur district of the Punjab, is sacred to Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh. A deep pool of water to the north of the village was an ancient place of pilgrimage known as Bad Tirath. Guru Nanak had visited it during his travels in the region. So did Guru Gobind Singh in 1706 soon after the battle of Muktsar. Gurdwara Charan Pak Patshahi I on the bank of the Bad Tirath was established in 1876. The present building was constructed in FebruaryMarch 1947 when the pool was also lined. The Guru Granth Sahib is scaled on a platform at the far end of a flatroofed rectangular hall. The Gurdwara is affiliated to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. There arc very few Sikh families in Haripura itself, but Sikh and nonSikh devotees from the surrounding villages gather on every new moon to have a dip in the sacred pool and hold a divan. Larger gatherings take place on the newmoon day in Phagun (JanuaryFebruary) and on the fullmoon day of Kattak to mark the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak.
BHUPAL, also called Bhupalan, a village 13 km north ofMansa (29° 59`N, 75° 23`E) in Bathinda district of the Punjab, is sacred to Guru Tegh Bahadur, who halted here for a night during his travels across the Malva region. The shrine built inside the village to commemorate the visit, called Gurdwara Nauvin Patshahi, comprises a flatroofed hall with a vaulted ceiling. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated in it on a canopied platform. Besides daily worship, special gatherings take place to mark the birth anniversaries of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh and the martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
SHAHIDGANJ AGITATION (1935-40) marked culmination of the tussle between Sikh and Muslim communities in the Punjab for the possession of a sacred site in Lahore upon which stood Gurdwara Shahidgahj (shahid = martyr, gahj = hoard, treasure or mart) in memory of Sikh martyrs of the eighteenth century and which the Muslims claimed as having been the location of an historic Islamic site.The Gurdwara is located in Landa Bazar midway between the Lahore railway station and the Delhi Gate at the site known earlier as Nakhas (Persian nakhkhas. meaning a marketplace for the sale of captives, horses and cattle taken as war prize). This was the place where thousands of Sikhs, including the celebrated Bhai Taru Singh, and about 3,000 captives of the Chhota Ghallughara campaign (1746) were executed or tortured to death.
DAMODARI, MATA (1597-1631), daughter of Narain Das, aJulka Khatri of the village of Dalla, 6 km southeast of Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district of the Punjab, was married to Guru Hargobind (1595-1644) on 15 February 1605. She gave birth to a son, Baba Gurditta (b. 1613), and a daughter, Bibi Viro (b. 1615). She died at Darauli Bhai now in Faridkot district on 13 July 1631. A small shrine on the outskirts of the village marks the site where the cremation took place.
HAQIQAT RAH MUQAM RAJE SHIVNABH KI Haqiqat Rah Muqam Raje Shivnabh Ki (account or description of way, i.e. journey to the abode of Raja Shivnabh) is an anonymous and undated short piece in Punjabi prose, found appended to some manuscript copies of the Guru Granth Sahib, particularly to copies of the Bhai Banno recension. The author of this account is supposed to be Bhai Paira, a learned Sikh who was deputed by Guru Arjan to go to Singhladip (Singhladip of the Janam Sakhis), present-day Sri Lanka, to fetch a copy of a manuscript called the Pran Sangll (Chain of the Vital Breath), an interpretation of Hatha Yoga, which was said to have been recited by Guru Nanak to the Raja of Sanghladip, Shivnabh.
NADA SAHIB, Gurdwara Patshahi Dasvin, situated at the end of a narrow spur of soft sandy rocks of the Sivalik foothills, on the left bank of the river Ghaggar, about 10 km east of Chandigarh (30°44`N, 76°46`E), commemorates the visit of Guru Gobind Singh, who halted here while travelling from Paonta Sahib to Anandpur after the battle of Bharigam in 1688. One Nadu Shah Lubana of the adjoining village served him and his followers with food and milk. The place remained obscure until one Bhai Motha Singh, who belonged to a village near by, discovered the sacred spot and raised a platform to perpetuate the memory of the Guru`s visit.
