SADHNA, one of the fifteen saints and sufis whose hymns are incorporated in the Guru Granth Sahib, was a qasai or butcher by profession who, by nis piety and devotion, had gained spiritual eminence. He is believed to have been born at the village of Sehvan, in Sindh. He was cremated at Sirhind, in the Punjab, where even today a tomb stands in his memory. He is considered to be a contemporary of Nam Dev, another medieval saint. Sadhna lived by selling n eat, though, as it is asserted, he never butchered the animals himself.
SOHAN SINGH, BHAl (1890-1921), one of the Nankana Sahib martyrs, was the youngest of the six children of Bhai Sher Singh and Mai Gabo of the village of Dingarian, in Jalandhar district. On the opening of the Lower Chenab Canal Colony during the 1890`s, the family migrated to Chakk No. 91 Dhannuana in Lyallpur district (now Faisalabad district of Pakistan). Sohan Singh grew up into a hefty young man with an uncommonly strong physique. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the 76th Battalion, then stationed at At lock. There he took the vows of the Khalsa and learnt to read and write Gurmukhi.
TIKA, derived from the root tik, a loan word from the aboriginal languages, meaning `to mark` or `to explain`, signifies commentary, exegesis or explanation, especially of a scriptural text. Originally meant to provide a simple paraphrase of the spiritual and mystical revelations, a tika may now embrace an exhaustive analysis and interpretation of the text. Such tikas and commentaries have been part of the Indian religious tradition since ancient times.In tracing the history, reference is made to Yaska Muni (circa 700 BC) who mentions in his Nirukta numerous preceding commentators of the sacred scriptures.
AMIR ULIMLA, also known as MUNTAKHAB ULHAQA`IQ, a collection of miscellaneous letters, in Persian script, mostly of Sikh chiefs of the Punjab addressed to one another on subjects relating to private and public affairs. Compiled by Amir Chand in A.H. 1209 (ADi 794-95), the manuscript comprises 127 folios and 247 letters and is preserved in the Oriental section of the British Library, London. On folio 125 of the manuscript is recorded a note referring to one Imanullah as its owner, implying that this is perhaps not the original copy prepared by Amir Chand.
