Historic Gurdwaras in Punjab

DERA SAHIB, GURDWARA, commonly pronounced Dehra Sahib is located in the revenue limits of Lohar village, 10 km east of Naushahra Panvan (31° 20`N, 74° 57`E), in Amritsar district of the Punjab. It marks the site of a village called Patthevind where Guru Nanak`s ancestors had lived. Guru Nanak himself often visited the village. An old well within the Gurdwara compound is said to be the one near which he had once stopped. The shrine was first established by Guru Hargobind (1595-1644), who also had the nearby pond converted into a sarovaror holy tank.

DUMAL GARH SAHIB GURUDWARA, ANANDPUR This Gurdwara is on the northern side of Kesgarh Sahib. Here, Guru Sahib used to train his sons. This place was also used as a playing ground. Wrestling matches and other competitions were also held here. On November 2,1703 when Ajmer Chand, the ruler of Bilaspur attacked Anandpur Sahib, Guru Sahib was sitting here under a bunyan tree.

DAMDAMA SAHIB GURUDWARA, ANANDPUR It is known as Gurdwara Takht Sahib as well. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib used to perform the functions of Akal Takht Sahib from this place. It was Diwane-i-Khas. It was also the court of Guru Sahib. Here, Guru Sahib used to receive representatives of different States as well as important guests. Here, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib was installed as Tenth Nanak on July 8,1675.

FATEHGARH SAHIB, GURDWARA, 5 km north of Sirhind (30°37`N, 76°23`E), marks the site of the execution of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh at the behest of Wazir Khan of Kunjpura, the faujdar of Sirhind. As Guru Gobind Singh evacuated Anandpur on the night of 5-6 December 1705, he was closely pursued by the host. In front ran the Sarsa swollen with rain water. Under cover of a quick rearguard action fought on the banks of the stream, he succeeded in crossing it, but the members of his family got scattered in the tumult.
