DASVANDH or Dasaundh, lit. a tenth part, refers to the practice among Sikhs of contributing in the name of the Guru one-tenth of their earnings towards the common resources of the community. This is their religious obligation a form of seva or humble service so highly valued in the Sikh system. The concept of dasvandh was implicit in Guru Nanak`s own line: "ghali khai kichhu hathhu dei, Nanak rahu pachhanahi sei He alone, 0 Nanak, knoweth the way who eats out of what he earneth by his honest labour and yet shareth part of it with others" (GG, 1245).
JANAM SAKHI derives its name from the number attached to the manuscript in the catalogue of the India Office Library, London (MS. Panj B40). It consists of a unique collection of sakhis or anecdotes concerning the life of Guru Nanak, and, although it sliares common sources with the Puratan and Adi Sakhian traditions, it constructs a different sakhi sequence and incorporates a substantial block of stories which are to be found in none of the other major traditions. This cluster of anecdotes was evidently drawn from the oral tradition of the compiler`s own area and includes all the principal janam sakhi forms such as narrative anecdote, narrative discourse, didactic discourse, and lieterodox discourse.
PAKPATAN, a tahsil town in Sahiwal (Montgomery) district of Pakistan, is known for the tomb of the famous Sufi saint Shaikh Farid ud Din Shakarganj (1173-1266). Guru Nanak visited Pakpatan during his travels through that part of the country. At the time of that visit he fell into a discourse with his successor, Farid II, at a place which is now marked by Gurdwara Nanaksar, about six kilometres to the west of the town, commemorating the Guru`s visit. Guru Nanak`s birth anniversary continued to be marked as a religious fair here until the partition of the country in 1947.
SAHOVAL, village 8 km southwest of Sialkot (32"30`N, 74"32`E) in Pakistan, is sacred to Guru Nanak (1469-1539) who once came here travelling from Sialkot and , according to local tradition, stayed under a ber tree (Ziziphus maiiritiana) near a pond for seven days. A gurdwara was later raised here and the pond lined into a sarovar or holy tank named Nanaksar. Gurdwara Nanaksar preserved within its compound the ber tree, reverently called Ber Sahib, under which Guru Nanak is said to have halted temporarily. The shrine was abandoned at the time of the 1947 exodus following the partition of the Punjab.
SIALKOT (32030`N, 74°32`N), an ancient town now in Pakistan, was visited by Guru Nanak more than once during his travels across the country. According to Gian Ratanavali, better known as Janam SakhiBhai Mani Singh, supported by local tradition, as he once arrived here travelling from his native Talvandi, via Saidpur, and took his seat under a ber tree southeast of the town across the Aik stream, he learnt that a Sun faqir, Hamza Ghaus, had laid the town under a curse of destruction and was undergoing a chalisa, or fortyday selfmortification, for the accomplishment of the doom he had invoked on the citizens.
