Durga, the consort of Shiva assumed the form of Kali, when during her war with the demons, she had to des with the Raktavija, whose every drop of blood which fell on the ground produced more demons. KALI (KALIYA) (My Lord) gave new life to Kali. (Gond Namdev, p. 874) The Lord who has created the beings and controls their movements. It cannot be a great feat for Him, if as Krishna He subdued and surmounted Kali. (Asa M. l, p. 350) Kali or Kaliya was a serpent king. He had fivfl heads and lived in a pool of the river Yamuna. Numerous serpents attended him. He emitted fire and smoke.

KALIAN CHAND, BABA (1440-1522), variously mentioned by chroniclers as Mahita Kalu, Kalu Rai, Kalu Chand, Kalian Rai and Kalian Chand, was the father of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikh faith. He was the elder of the two sons of Baba Shiv Ram, a Bedi Khatn, and Mata Banarasi of the village of Patthevind (no longer in existence). The village fell in what is now the Amritsar district of the Punjab. The family later shifted to Talvandi Rai Bhoi Ki, now known as Nankana Sahib, in present day Sheikliupura district of Pakistan, where Shiv Ram became the village patvdn or keeper of revenue records, a post occupied by Baba Kalian Chand after his father`s death.

KALIAN SINGH, son of Dyal Das, was a warrior in the retinue of Guru Gobind Singh.He died fighting in defence of Taragarh Fort at Anandpur in 1700.

KALIAN SUD, a resident of Lahore, was a, soldier by profession. He once waited on Guru Arjan, and, as records Bhai Man! Singh, Sikhdn di, Bhagal Maid, began relating his feats on the field of battle. The Guru said, "It is easy to wield a weapon in the field of battle, but a true soldier is one who overcomes such foes as ignorance, lust, anger, avarice, and worldly attachment. Humility is his armour and God`s Name his only weapon." Kalian learnt to be humble and fell at the Guru`s feet. He received initiation at the hands of the Guru.

KALIANA, BHAI (d. 1621), a Bindrao Khatri, was a leading Sikh of the time of Guru Arjan. He received initiation at the hands of the Guru, who instructed him to practise the Word and to devote himself to the service of others (See MAM CHAND HANDA, BHAi). Bhai Kaliana was also trained in the fighting skills and served in the armed retinue of Guru Hargobind. In the battle at Ruhela, he fell fighting valiantly.

KALIANA, BHAI, a prominent and learned Sikh of the time of Guru Arjan. The Guru once sent him to the hill country, present day Himachal Pradesh, to raise funds and bring timber for the holy Harimandar, then being built at Amritsar. When Kaliana arrived at Mandi, the capital of a hill state of the same name, he found that it was Janam Astami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krsna, pro-claimed by the ruler, Raja Hari Sen, to be observed by the entire population as a day of fasting. Bhai Kaliana and the Sikhs accompanying him did not consider themselves bound by the prince`s fiat in a purely religious matter and did not observe the fast.

KALIYUGA In Sat Yuga there was truth; in Treta, there were Yajnas (sacrifices) and in Dwapara, there was ritualistic worship. In the three Ages, there were three types of acts, but in Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is the only base. (Gaurt Bairagan Ravidas, p. 346) In Kali Yuga, the chariot is of fire and falsehood is the charioteer. (Var Asa, M. l, p. 470) In the Kali Yuga, the only merit is of the Name of the Lord.

Amrit (ambrosia), Sassi (moon), Dhena (wish-fulfilling cow), Lakshmi, Kalpataru (wish-fulfilling tree), Sikhira (the horse) and Sunagar (Dhanwantara) all came out from the ocean, the lord of the rivers, but because of its past actions,it still remains saltish. (Dhanasari Trtlochan, p. 695) Kalpataru is also called Parijata. It was produced when the milk-ocean was churned by god and demons. It was kept in Amaravati, the heaven of Indra.

KALU NATH, son of Jaimal, also called Data, a Dhalival Jatt of the Malva region, became a Vaisnav sddhu while still very young and, according to his biographer, Balmukand Das, roamed the countryside accompanied by his mother, Mohini, and young brother, Chikha. Later, he settled down under a jand tree near Nalhana, a village in Bathinda district, and practised severe austerities. During the battle of Mehraj in 1634, he served Guru Hargobind and his Sikhs with milk and food. As Guru Hargobind visited Nathana after the battle, Kalu Nath offered obeisance and received the Guru`s blessing. Kalu Nath is still remembered with reverence in that part of the Punjab, and an annual fair is held in April at his shrine at Nathana.

KAM (Skt. kdmd), meaning desire, longing, concupiscence, sensuality or lasciviousness, is counted among the five cardinal sins or sinful propensities. In common usage, the term stands for passion for sexual pleasure and it is in this sense that it is considered an evil in Sikhism. In Brahrnanical literature kdm is not always disdained. Kam as Kamadeva is a god in the Hindu pantheon comparable to Eros of Greek mythology and Cupid of the Romans, and is as such not contradictory to spiritual life.

KAMA O Kama! (addressed as lust), the giver of a place in hell and transmigrator in many births, the abductor of the mind, visitor of the three worlds and destroyer of meditation, austerity and character..... (Shalok Sahaskriti M. 5, p- 1358) In the above reference the lust has been personified as Kama, the god of love. In Hindu mythology, he is the son of Dharma, the god of justice, by Sraddha, the goddess of faith. According to Harivansha Purana, he is the son of Lakshmi.
